Population Research Guide Sheet

Directions:
  • Remember to only visit sites as directed below. Please don’t risk losing computer access privileges.
  • Go to the “US Census Bureau State and County Quick Facts (homepage)” webpage using the following address: http://quickfacts.census.gov/qfd/
  • Click on the “USA Quickfacts” link in the upper right hand corner of the screen and examine the facts presented. Record the requested information in the chart provided.
  • When you are finished gathering data from this page, click on the “Select Another State” link in the upper right hand corner to get back to the homepage. Now click on the state of Tennessee and examine the facts presented. Record the information requested in your table.
  • From the top of this webpage, use the dropdown menus labeled “Tennessee Counties” to locate “Sullivan County” and click on the “Go” button. Record the requested information in your chart.
  • From the top of this page, use the dropdown menu labeled “Tennessee Cities” to find “Kingsport” and click on the “Go” button to the right. Record all requested information in your chart.
  • Now find the link near the top of the webpage that says “Browse Data Sets for Kingsport.” Click on the link and then on “Demographic, Social, Economic, and Housing Characteristics”. Answer the questions given.
  • Near the top of the page, click on the link that says “View a Fact Sheet for a **race, ethnic, or ancestry group**”. Choose “White alone” and click “Go”. Fill in the Chart and answer the questions provided. Then go to the top of the page and again select View a Fact Sheet for a **race, ethnic, or ancestry group**”. This time select “Black alone” and click “Go.” Fill in the chart and answer the questions.
  • At the top of the page, find the “Main” link and click on it. This will take you to the “US Census Bureau America Factfinder” page at http://factfinder.census.gov/home/saff/main.html?_lang=en. Find the US Population Clock and record the current US population. Click on the “more Population clocks” link. Record the curent world population. Click on the “US POPclock” link near the bottom of the webpage. Answer the questions. Use the back button and then click on the “World POPclock” link near the bottom of the webpage. From this page, click on the “World Population Information” link at the bottom of the page. Study the graphs and answer the questions provided on your data sheet.
  • Access the “City-Data.com” site for Kingsport using the following address: http://www.city-data.com/city/Kingsport-Tennessee.html. Review the material provided and answer the questions.
  • Return to the “US Census Bureau State and County Quick Facts (homepage)” webpage using the following address: http://quickfacts.census.gov/qfd/. Use the same process as before to access information on Tennessee’s largest city, Memphis, and largest county, Shelby County. Fill in the appropriate info in your data table.
  • Now “Google.com” for the most populous and least populous cities in the US. Take the info that you find to the above site to get the same info as before on these cities.
  • Is there somewhere in the US that you have always wanted to live? Find the quickfacts on that area as well.
